Bail bonds FAQ · Topic 1
Bail Basics in Connecticut
Start here if this is your first time dealing with an arrest. These answers to common Connecticut bail questions explain the key terms you will hear from police, the court and your bail agent.
What is bail?
Bail is money or a promise that lets an arrested person go home while the case continues, on the condition that they come back for every court date.
What is a bail bond?
A bail bond is a guarantee from a licensed surety bail bond agent to the court that the full bail will be paid if the person does not appear. You pay the agent a state-set premium instead of the full bail amount.
Who sets bail in Connecticut?
Police can set bail at the station after booking. If the person is not released there, a judge reviews bail at arraignment and can keep, lower or raise it and add conditions.
What types of release are there?
A person may be released on a written promise to appear, a non-surety bond (a signed promise to pay if they miss court), a surety bond posted by a bail agent, or cash bail paid in full.
Is a bail bond the same as paying cash bail?
No. Cash bail means paying the full amount yourself. With a surety bail bond, you pay a smaller premium and the bail agent guarantees the rest to the court.
Bail bonds FAQ · Topic 2
Bail Bond Cost and Payment Questions
Bail bond pricing in Connecticut is regulated, so you should never be surprised by the cost. This section of our New Britain bail bonds FAQ explains how it works.
How much does a bail bond cost in Connecticut?
The premium is set by the state: 10% of the first $5,000 of bail plus 7% of any amount above $5,000, as approved by the Connecticut Insurance Department. Every licensed company uses the same rate.
Can you give some examples?
A $2,500 bail costs $250. A $5,000 bail costs $500. A $10,000 bail costs $850. A $25,000 bail costs $1,900. A $50,000 bail costs $3,650. A $100,000 bail costs $7,150.
Do I get the premium back when the case ends?
No. The premium is the fee for posting the bond, and it is earned once the person is released. It is not refunded, even if the charges are dropped.
Do you offer payment plans?
Payment plans may be available for qualifying clients. Call us and we will explain your options before you sign anything.
Is collateral required?
Many smaller bonds need no collateral. Larger bonds may require collateral or an additional cosigner. Any collateral is returned once the bond is discharged and all obligations are met.
Bail bonds FAQ · Topic 3
How the Bail Process Works in New Britain
This part of our New Britain bail bonds FAQ walks through what actually happens from the moment you call us until your loved one is released.
How do I bail someone out of jail?
Call us with the person’s full name and date of birth. We find where they are held, confirm the bail, complete the paperwork with you and post the bond so they can be released.
What information do I need when I call?
The person’s full name, date of birth and where they are being held. If you know the charges, the bail amount or a booking number, share those too.
How long does release take?
It depends on where the person is held. Release from a police station after bail is posted is often fairly quick. Release from a state facility usually takes longer because of processing.
Can bail be posted at the New Britain Police Department?
Yes. When police set bail after booking at 10 Chestnut St, a licensed agent can post the bond at the station so the person can be released with a court date.
What happens if bail is not posted at the station?
The person is brought to New Britain Superior Court the next court day. A judge reviews bail at arraignment. If bail still is not posted, adult men are usually sent to Hartford Correctional Center and women to York Correctional Institution.
Can I do the paperwork without coming to your office?
In many cases, yes. Paperwork can often be completed by phone and email. You are also welcome at our office at 200 Main St, New Britain.

Cosigner Questions and Responsibilities
Cosigning a bail bond is a serious commitment, and it raises many Connecticut bail questions. Read these answers before you sign, and ask us anything that is not clear.
What is a cosigner?
A cosigner, also called an indemnitor, is the person who signs the bail bond agreement and promises the defendant will go to every court date.
What am I responsible for as a cosigner?
You agree to help make sure the defendant appears in court and follows the bond terms. If they miss court and are not returned, you may be responsible for the full bail amount and related costs.
What happens if the defendant misses court?
The judge can order a re-arrest and begin forfeiture of the bond. Call us right away. The sooner the person returns to court, the better the outcome usually is.
Can I stop being a cosigner?
If you believe the defendant will not appear, contact us immediately. In some situations the bond can be surrendered. We will explain what is possible in your case.
Bail bonds FAQ · Topic 5
Court Dates and Life After Release
Getting out is only the first step. These answers to common Connecticut bail questions cover where the case is heard, what conditions may apply and when the bond finally ends.
Where are New Britain criminal cases heard?
At New Britain Superior Court, 20 Franklin Square. Part A handles the most serious felonies, and G.A. 15 handles other felonies, misdemeanors and motor vehicle cases.
How do I find a court date?
Check the paperwork given at release, or use the case look-up on the Connecticut Judicial Branch website. You can also call us and we will help you find it.
What are conditions of release?
A judge may add conditions such as staying away from certain people or places, check-ins or travel limits. Breaking a condition can lead to re-arrest, so follow every one.
Can bail be lowered?
A defense lawyer can ask the court to review or reduce bail. We handle the bond; for legal questions about the case, speak with a lawyer.
When does the bail bond end?
The bond normally ends when the case is resolved and the court releases it. Any collateral is then returned once all obligations are met.
